About EFT

Emotionally Focused Therapy is a therapy model grounded in over thirty years of research that prioritises connection, and how the way we process emotion directly correlates to the way we experience relationships. It isn’t just for romantic relationships - all types of relationships are made stronger by bettering how we relate to and communicate with ourselves and others. Individual EFT focuses on understanding ourselves, the way we manage our own need for value, worth and connection, and how we relate to the world.

The meat of EFT involves identifying patterns in our behaviour around how we connect to loved ones when these patterns are undermining that connection, and then developing new patterns of interacting which instead strengthen that connection. These patterns often exist as a defense mechanism to protect ourselves from being hurt. Whether we realise it or not, these defense mechanisms can misread our relationships and rear up to protect us. This can cause misunderstandings, difficulty in communicating, or doubts about the strength of the relationship. It’s pretty difficult to talk to somebody from behind a high wall with a locked gate, after all!

When we can recognise these well-intentioned but unhelpful patterns our brain has employed to try and protect us, then with the help of an EFT-trained professional we can begin the process of rewriting those defenses to let our loved ones in, and grant ourselves the opportunity for closer connections, stronger relationships, and deeper intimacy.

EFT is a blame-free, short-term, structured, and process-experiential model. What this means is that it's about understanding AND doing - you don't just learn to talk the talk, you also get help with walking the walk.
